The Joseph Fraser Memorial Hospital was founded in 1923 by the Joseph Fraser Memorial Trust as a nonprofit hospital in honour of Joseph Fraser who was an extremely successful and respected planter in Sri Lanka from 1872 to 1913. His wife Chrissie Fraser enlisted the assistance of the planters association of Ceylon to build a suitable memorial to commemorate the life of her late husband for which she would provide the funding. Thus the Joseph Fraser Memorial Hospital came into existence and opened its doors to the European community in 1923.
It was opened to the general public in 1977 and now 88 years from its inception continues to serve the citizens of Sri Lanka. The Fraser has been a woman and childrens hospital since the mid 90’s.
The Fraser has now been expanded with 03 new private labour suites, 02 new operating theatres including High Dependency Unit (HDU) and a Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU).
The Fraser also has 06 new luxury rooms and a luxury suite all equipped with luxury beds, cable TV, Fridge & phone. All rooms are air-conditioned and boast more interior space than any other hospital. The suite and one super luxury room have private rear verandah’s opening out to individual rear gardens.
For anybody who wishes to bring their baby into this world in the most beautiful surroundings in Sri Lanka, this is the place. It truly is as good as home.
